Our salt begins its journey deep beneath the clear waters of Lake Huron, in the town of Goderich, Ontario—home to the largest underground salt mine in the world. Formed over 400 million years ago by an ancient seabed, this pristine mineral treasure is carefully extracted from more than 500 metres below the surface.
We blend this ancient Canadian salt with local ingredients like lavender, garlic, maple, and herbs from nearby farms to bring out the natural and vibrant flavours of Ontario, Canada.
Hi!
I’m Penny—maker, shopkeeper, and proud new-ish resident of Huron County. Just a few years ago, my husband and I packed up and moved to this corner of Ontario having never even been here before. We passed a sign that read “Welcome to the West Coast of Ontario”—and we were a little confused… until we saw Lake Huron for the first time. Its Caribbean-blue waters and jaw-dropping sunsets were unlike anything we’d expected. It felt like we’d stumbled onto the ocean—right here in Ontario.
Not long after, we learned about the salt mine beneath Lake Huron in Goderich. It blew my mind that such a massive natural wonder was right below our feet, and yet the salt was mostly used for roads and water softeners. I couldn’t stop thinking about how special it would be to turn it into something people could actually taste and enjoy. (Not the road salt, they have a culinary quality salt too!)
After a year in Blyth, I realized I missed the deep sense of community I’d had in our previous hometown. On a bit of a whim, I opened a little store—just hoping to meet people and feel more connected. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Through the shop, I’ve met so many amazing people from Blyth and beyond, collaborated on local events and fundraisers, and found space to create again.
I've been a maker since I was 18; always crafting, blending, and dreaming up new things. The store gave me the perfect outlet to share some of the products I've made for years—and to introduce something new: Lake Huron Sea Salt. It’s been such a joy to see how much people love it. Locals gift it to visiting friends, and visitors take it home as a delicious memory of their time on Ontario’s West Coast.
I’ve always believed in supporting other local artisans, and that mission continues with our salts. Each blend is made by hand and features ingredients from local farms: lavender from Bayfield Lavender Farm, maple sugar from Blyth Creek Maple Farm, and garlic from Ataboy Farms in St Marys. These collaborations help shape flavours that are not only bold and beautiful but proudly rooted in this region.
As interest in Canadian-made goods grows, it feels like the perfect time to share Lake Huron Sea Salt with a wider audience. It’s more than a seasoning—it’s a true taste of Canada, crafted with care, and made to be shared around the table.
I hope you love it as much as we do creating it!
Penny ♥
